Our future brain: damage-resistant with unique new abilities
Our future brain: damage-resistant with unique new abilities
Neurons made from exotic nanomaterials could one day enable humans to survive even the most horrendous accident, and as a bonus, provide amazing new capabilities.
Nanoengineer John Burch, co-designer of the nanofactory video, “Productive Nanosystems from Molecules to Superproducts,” predicts that by mid-2030s, we could be replacing brain cells with damage-resistant nanomaterials that process thoughts much faster than today’s biological brains.
“The new brain would include our same consciousness, memories and personality that existed before the conversion,” Burch says, “but it would run much faster and would increase our memory a thousand-fold.”
In addition, others experts say, this futuristic brain will allow us to control the speed of our thoughts; we could jump from 100 milliseconds, the response time of today’s brains, to 50 nanoseconds, millions of times faster.
Creating thoughts at this speed would, in our mind at least, slow everything down. Our perception would speed up, but activities would appear to slow down as our brain ran faster. Events that seem like minutes would actually be happening in seconds.
Burch describes how we would switch to the new brain. A daily pill would supply nanomaterials and instructions for nanobots to format new neurons and position them next to existing biological brain cells to be replaced. These changes would be unnoticeable to us, but within six months, we would be enjoying our new brain.
The new brain will allow wireless interface with computers and other digital technologies. We could access the Internet, control electronics, and make phone calls, with just our thoughts. Or we could understand complicated subjects – even speak a new language – without need for study.
Should a person with the new damage-resistant brain die in an accident, their body could be a total loss, but the brain would survive. Biological brains die within minutes after the heart stops; our new brain will simply turn itself off and wait for a new power supply.
All memories and consciousness would remain intact after a fatal accident. Rescue workers would remove the brain from the deceased body and reinstall it into a newly-cloned body. The patient would ‘wake up’ in their new body and resume life, not even realizing they had died.
Would we feel depressed from dying? Maybe, but this might be offset with the joy of living in an upgraded body. Standard body clones in the 2030s could include stronger bones and muscles, skin that instantly repairs itself when damaged, and hair that changes style and color on demand.
Some ask, with all this technology in our bodies, will we still be considered human? Life extension enthusiasts point out that we already enjoy false teeth, titanium hip replacements, cochlear implants, and artificial limbs.
In the 2030s, some will opt for a complete body transformation, and with their new damage-resistant brain, will be confident that memories, emotions, personality, and consciousness will remain unchanged during the transfer. Afterwards they will feel awareness that they are the same person who existed before the transfer – with all their ‘humanity’ intact.
Could this bold vision happen by mid-2030s? Experts believe that it can. Nanotech and quantum computer advancements that forecast this “magical future” are already in early development stages today.
This article will appear in various print media and blogs; comments welcome. See other published work by Dick at http://www.positivefuturist.com and click on the “published work” tab.

USS Las Vegas and Guests Visit Enterprise Bridge
The USS Las Vegas Star Trek fan club, a chapter of the IFT, requested and was given permission and access to the Enterprise Bridge set located at Star Trek: The Experience (STTE) on Saturday evening for a group photo. Chat Boutte, Operations Manager and Marketing Director for STTE, generously allowed the entire crew of the Vegas, as well as some special guests to have approximately 30 minutes on the bridge. A photo was taken of the crew and provided on CD for distribution to the members.
Guests of the Vegas were also given the chance for the photo opportunity as well. Joseph and Karen Kerezman, of costumescostumescostumes.com were dressed in TNG uniforms and graciously provided atmosphere for many of those taking photos. Several people involved in the Xanadu Las Vegas Convention also attended and enjoyed being photographed.
In all, about 30 people attended the event and wandered around the Enterprise Bridge. Everyone had a great time.
The officers and crew of the USS Las Vegas, as well as our guests, would like to extend a heartfelt thanks to Diana (our guide and photographer) and to Chad Boutte for providing this opportunity to make a dream come true.

Science Fiction Book Club Meeting (SNAFFU)
The Aug. 31st meeting topic will be "Mythologies, Mythical Creatures, and Mythos." A surprise short video will be shown. We will also be giving away some DVDs. From H.P. Lovecraft's Chululu, to the dragons of Anne McCaffrey's series, to many more novels and stories, SF authors have developed their own unique mythologies for interesting mythological or original creatures such as mermaids, dragons, elves, and more. (Note we will not discuss werewolves or vampires since there is enough to say about them for another meeting entirely).
The 2008 Hugo winners will also be announced.
SNAFFU will meet Sept. 28 and Oct. 26 at the 2-4pm at the Clark County Library.
SNAFFU has a Yahoo Group you can join at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/SNAFFU/
Star Trek Experience adieu....
We were glad to be able to go one last time. It is really a shame they will be tearing it down. Quarks will also close Sept. 1 since it is owned by the Experience. The fate of the Space-themed casino area next to it is unknown.
We remembered when it first opened and they had special BJ tables and slot machines that could be run not just by pulling the lever or pressing a button, but by running your hand through one side. They also had special video poker machines with strange card faces, all to be "science-fictional". The restrooms had SF messages in the glass. I think the urinals in the Men's room may still have something.
The original ride is the Klingon experience, where Klingons kidnap the visitors because one is Piccard's ancestor, and you get transported to the future, and end up in an exciting shuttle ride back to earth (Vegas). I enjoyed going along with the show - asking the future-time ST vessel people questions like "can you tell me who won the 2008 election" or "can you give me a good stock tip?" or "can't we stay here with you in the future?" We also felt they hadn't quite brought us back to the right year when we saw The Stardust as we zoomed back into Vegas! But I guess at the last minute they managed to get the wormhole over the right year!
The Borg Adventure may be the more interesting of the two rides, with a neat simulator ride as the Borg tried to assimilate us. Thank goodness we were immune!!
We had to eat at Quarks for one last time, and enjoyed the overpriced food. A Klingon and a Ferengei also came by to visit with us.
The stores at Quarks are closing down and had a lot less to sell. A few items are available for 20% off. I just wish I had had the foresight to buy a phaser before we went into the rides so I could have defended myself against those darn Klingons and Borgs!!
Farewell - Star Trek Experience - we enjoyed having you in Vegas.
(Note the props will be returned to Paramount, and anything left will be destroyed.)
Las Vegas Science Fiction and Fantasy Book Club September Meetup location change
Las Vegas Klingon Meetup disbanding
Since the Convention has now past, I will be closing down this Meet Up Group. From the reports I heard from Las Vegas, it was a blast, I am sorry I could not make it after all.If you were a member of the Las Vegas Klingon Meetup you can login and remove yourself at http://klingon.meetup.com/121/
In order to close this group it needs to have no members, so if you can log onto Meetup and remove yourself from the group, I can close it down. This will free up an out of date group from meet up.
Thanks

USS Las Vegas and Guests Hold Special Meeting at Quark's
There was at least one fan that moved to Vegas specifically to work for STTE. Robert Niwa, the Chief Communications Officer for the Vegas moved to Las Vegas in 1998 and worked in the retail area of STTE for some time. The server for the evening, Greg Pyatt said he had been working at STTE for almost 8 years and had seen many fans come through the doors.
The USS Las Vegas is a local chapter of the International Federation of Trekkers and has been holding monthly meetings at Quark’s since January 2006, about 2 ½ years. The club has grown from just three members at the first meeting to a normal monthly meeting attendance of about 30 members. The club holds meetings on the 3rd Wednesday of each month beginning at 6:30 PM, except for December each year when a holiday party is substituted for the regular meeting.

Reminder: USS Las Vegas Meeting on Aug 20th
Note that this is a dinner meeting and while not required, most order dinner. Due to the fact that Quark's will not split the check, attendees are asked to bring enough cash to cover their dinner and/or bar bill, so that the check can be paid at the end of the evening.
We had been told that we would be able to use the Captain's Lounge for this event, but those plans fell through. We will have an area in the bar as we usually do. We expect a fairly large turnout, so come early and plan to have a great time. See you there!
Summerlin Sci-Fantasy Book Club has been discontinued
I am updating the meetings and events calendar to reflect this.
New Las Vegas Fandom Directory on Xanadu Las Vegas website
Currently the directory is web-only while we solicit feedback, but soon we will be printing a paper edition to distribute in bookstores, comic stores, game stores, libraries, and other locations around town.
Please send additions, corrections, and other updates to marketing@xanadulasvegas.com.
Xanadu Las Vegas committee boggled by Xanadu movie

Although Xanadu Las Vegas is actually named after the summer capital of Mongolian emperor Kubla Khan (as referenced in the poem "Kubla Khan" by Samuel Taylor Coleridge), when many people hear the name of our convention they instead think of the 1980 movie "Xanadu."
Since joining the Xanadu Las Vegas committee I've been wondering why people keep asking me if I am going to dress up like Olivia Newton John for the convention. Fortunately, Alan White hosted a special Cineholics last Thursday night for the edification of several members the Xanadu Las Vegas convention committee, including myself.
Xanadu: the movie is a disco roller-skating fantasy musical. Please stop for a moment and contemplate that phrase. Disco. Roller-skating. Fantasy. Musical.
Personally, I felt like I had not ingested the proper drugs to fully enjoy the experience. But I continued to watch in horrified fascination as each new musical number topped the previous in its ridiculousness, finally culminating in this grand finale (which is unfortunately now stuck in my head, so I shall inflict it upon the rest of you):
Scott actually liked it! So be forewarned: I think some of the songs from the movie might be heard during the Saturday night 80s dance at the convention. :)

Robert Picardo's 2nd Annual Charity Auction Considered a Smashing Success!

Approximately 90 people attended the $35-a-plate dinner and bid thousands of dollars on the post-dinner auction of Star Trek, Stargate, and Robert Picardo memorabilia. Picardo kept the crowd laughing throughout the evening with his quips and jokes between bidding rounds. He was assisted by his friend and colleague Garrett Wang, who played Ensign Harry Kim on Star Trek: Voyager. Both were signing autographs on the spot for bidders and other fans.
Other entertainment was provided in addition to the dinner and auction. Cartoonist Tye Bourdony provided an art show of his "Lighter Side of Sci-Fi" comics. Robert Picardo and an Elvis impersonator opened the evening's live entertainment by singing a duet, and then "Elvis" sang a few more songs. Later in the evening the "Alien Warrior Comedian" made the audience howl and groan with his edgy jokes and puns, including a threat to shoot them with his ray gun loaded with "a dangerous neurotoxin - Las Vegas tap water."
Some of the more memorable moments and items auctioned:
"Everyone needs a little head in the bedroom...now you can have mine," offered Picardo as he auctioned off a glow-in-the-dark revolving cube that contained an etching of his head. "Bob's head in the bedroom for $200 -- who wants Bob's head in the bedroom for $200? ... If you put this on YouTube, I'll kill you."
Picardo personalized another item by wearing it. "I have $70 for this hat," Picardo said, apparently unhappy that no one was bidding it higher. "And now I'm going to put my DNA on it," he said as he put it on his head. This started a bidding war and drove the final price up to $135.
When auctioning off the script to the movie "Shockwave," Picardo noted that it was a piece of history because it was the worst performance he'd ever given and he would never be so rotten again. "I accepted the job without reading the script -- I thought my character died on page 16. I didn't realize that I came back in the last two minutes of the film as a robotic zombie." He autographed it for the winner with, "What a stinker! Robert Picardo"

Xanadu Las Vegas Hits Creation-con!

Xanadu Las Vegas purchased a table last weekend at Creation Entertainment's Official Star Trek convention at the Las Vegas Hilton. As you can see by the picture, we had a great table setup this time. We connected with many wonderful people over the five days we were present. Many locals were very happy that there will finally be a local Las Vegas science fiction, horror & fantasy convention. We sold several memberships and exhibitor tables. I want to thank all that helped make this a wonderful and successful convention for Xanadu Las Vegas.
